We all manage positions differently. Whether you're someone that likes to close a trade at 50% profit or 20%, positions can be managed several different ways within the tastytrade desktop platform and web-based platform. Prefer viewing a video instead? Please visit our Platform Quick Guides.
Closing a Position from the Positions tab
- Click on the Positions tab.
- Select the position that you want to close. First, single click the symbol group (if enabled) to view your options legs.
- Select the option(s) you want to close by single clicking on it. Each selection will highlight a lighter shade gray.
- After selecting the legs you want to close, right-click and select "close position" from the pop-up window to generate a closing order ticket.
Closing a Position from the Right Sidebar Order Window

- Enter the symbol you want to close by inputting it in the symbol field at the top of the desktop platform or click the symbol you want to close. This will ensure that your position will be displayed. In the right column sidebar menu under the “Orders” header locate the position that you originally opened.
- Once you locate the order you originally opened, right click on it. A pop-up menu will appear where you will have the option of generating an opposite order. Click “Opposite Order” and it will generate a closing order ticket.
Closing a Position from the Activity tab
- Click on the Activity tab
- Locate the order your original opening order. You can narrow down your search by only viewing “Filled” orders, increasing your period dates, and searching for a specific symbol.
- Once you find the filled order, place your cursor over it and right-click. A menu will appear beside your cursor. Mouseover and select “Opposite Order” from the pop-up window to generate a closing order ticket.
Manually Closing in the Trade Tab
- Click on the Trade tab and enter the Table view.
- Open the expiration date where you have your position on. You can quickly see which expiration you have open positions in by locating the gray dot along the expiration row.
- Locate your open position within your option's expiration. Open positions are indicated by a gray box over the bid or ask side of the strike(s) you have an open position on. In the illustration below, we have a short call spread where we are short the 147 strike and long the 150 strike.
- Click the “Ask” side the short leg (147 strike) to buy it back and the “Bid” side of the long leg (150 strike) to sell it. A closing order ticket will be generated at the bottom of the trade table.
Once a closing order ticket is generated, enter and lock the price by clicking the padlock then click Review and Send.
On the Review and Send screen, please review your order carefully. From this window, you also may clear the order or edit the order which will take you back to the previous window.
Click “Send Order” to route your closing order.
Closing an Order from Portfolio page
- Go to the Portfolio section by clicking the portfolio icon along the left-hand side column menu.
- Locate the position you want to close
- Click on the symbol group (if enabled) to expand your positions. Symbol groups are enabled if a drop-down menu is located immediately to the right of the symbol with an arrow pointing down: Your positions will populate immediately below.
- Click each leg(s) you want to close. A pop-up menu will appear indicating which legs are selected and the option to create a closing order. Click Close Positions to create a closing order. You’ll have the opportunity to edit the price and review your order after clicking Close Position.
- Review your order carefully. From this window, you also may click the edit order button to go back to the previous window.
- Click Send Order to close your position.
Manually Closing in the Trade Window
- Go to the Trade section by clicking the trade icon along the left-hand side column menu.
- Locate your open position within your option’s expiration. Click the expiration header to see other expirations. You can quickly see which expiration you have open positions in by locating the gray dot along the expiration row.
- Locate your open position within your option's expiration. This is indicated by a gray box over the bid or ask side of the strike(s) you have an open position on. In the screenshot below, we have a short call spread where we are short the 147 strike and long the 150 strike.
- Click the “Ask” side of the short leg (147 strike) to buy it back and the “Bid” side of the long leg (150 strike) to sell it. A closing order ticket generates along the right-hand side of the Trade window.
- You may edit the closing order price within the order ticket. Click “Review and Send” once your order ticket is complete. From there you can review your order or select the edit order button to go back to the order ticket window.
- Click Send Order to close your position.
To close a position while you have the Group filter enabled first tap on the symbol to expand the view and show the individual options or shares. Then tap each order leg you want to close and it will be selected with a white border. Also a menu will slide up from the bottom of the app. Tap Close Position and you will be taken to the trade page with a closing order populated.

To close a position while you have the Ungroup filter enabled the process is the same. Tap on each order leg you want to close and they will be highlighted with a white border. A menu will slide up from the bottom of the app. Tap Close Position and you will be taken to the trade page with a closing order populated.
