Limited to your buying account's buying power

When going long or purchasing stocks or ETFs in a cash account, all shares must be fully paid. The amount of shares you can buy is dependent on how much money you have available to spend (or available stock buying power).


Buying Power Requirement for Stocks or ETFs in a Margin account

Initial Requirement

Stock >= $3.00

For stock at or above $3.00/share, the initial requirement for long stock is typically 50%*. 


Stock < $3.00

For stocks below $3.00/share, the initial requirement for long stock is 100%*.


Maintenance Requirements

Stock >= $5.00

For stocks at or above $5.00/share, the maintenance requirement for long stock is typically 25%*.


Stock between $3.00 and $5.00

For stocks below $5.00/share but at or above $3.00/share, the maintenance requirement for long stock is typically 50%*. 


Stock < $3.00

For stocks below $3.00/share, the maintenance requirement for long stock is typically 100%*.


*Some stocks may have elevated margin requirements.
